چکیده

We consider the effect of Gaussian white noise on fast–slow dynamical systems with one fast and two slow variables, containing a folded-node singularity. In the absence of noise, these systems are known to display mixed-mode oscillations, consisting of alternating largeand small-amplitude oscillations. We quantify the effect of noise and obtain critical noise intensities above which the small-amplitude oscillations become hidden by fluctuations. Furthermore we prove that the noise can cause sample paths to jump away from so-called canard solutions with high probability before deterministic orbits do. This early-jump mechanism can drastically influence the local and global dynamics of the system by changing the mixed-mode patterns. Freyana anatina (Koch, 1844) Feather mites (Acarina, Freyanoidea) recorded for the first time on wild ducks (Subfamily, Anatinae) in Turkey.

This study was performed to determine the presence of mite species on wild ducks (Subfamily, Anatinae) in Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 12 ducks were caught in the 2003-2004 hunting seasons and inspected for the presence of mite species. At the end of the examinations six ducks were found to be infested by mites. One mite species was found on the infested ducks. This species were identif...

Recent and chronic exposure of wild ducks to lead in human-modified wetlands in Santa Fe Province, Argentina.

Poisoning of waterfowl due to ingestion of lead pellets is a worldwide problem in areas that are subject to hunting. No studies have assessed exposure of waterbirds to this heavy metal in Argentina, in spite of intense hunting activity, and the fact that only lead ammunition is commercially available. The objective of this study was to evaluate duck exposure to lead by examining gizzard and bon...

Contamination of free-range ducks by chlordecone in Martinique (French West Indies): a field study.

The former use of chlordecone (CLD) in the French West Indies has resulted in long-term pollution of soils and subsequently of food chains. In contaminated areas, free-range ducks used to control weeds in orchards may be exposed to CLD through polluted soil ingestion. The question arises whether they may be consumed. Muscovy ducks were raised on a guava orchard planted on a soil moderately cont...

Thinking Like a Duck: Fall Lake Use and Movement Patterns of Juvenile Ring-Necked Ducks before Migration

The post-fledging period is one of the least studied portions of the annual cycle in waterfowl. Yet, recruitment into the breeding population requires that young birds have sufficient resources to survive this period. We used radio-telemetry and generalized estimating equations to examine support for four hypotheses regarding the drivers of landscape scale habitat use and movements made by juve...

The Effect of Kleptoparasitic Bald Eagles and Gyrfalcons on the Kill Rate of Peregrine Falcons Hunting Dunlins Wintering in British Columbia

Kleptoparasitism in birds has been the subject of much research, and the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a known kleptoparasite. It has been reported to pirate ducks captured by Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus), but ours is the first study to examine the effect of kleptoparasitic Bald Eagles on the kill rate of shorebird-hunting Peregrines and indirectly on a population of Dunlins ...
